Abstract

The invention comprises dyes which, as their free acids, are of formula <FORM:0899376/IV (c)/1> where R is H or an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms, which may be substituted, X is Cl or Br, Y is a substituent of at most 13 carbon atoms either directly or through O, S or N, attached to the triazine ring, Z and Z1 may be H or SO3H and n is 0, 1 or 2, provided that the dyes have at least 3 SO3H groups. The dyes mat be made by diazotizing an appropriate naphthylamine sulphonic acid and coupling with the required triazine component, by treating an appropriate aminoazo dye with the required dihalotriazine or by introducing the Y group by conventional methods into corresponding dihalo-triazine dyes. Representative of specified values for R are methyl butyl and hydroxyethyl. Indicated for Y are, for example, propyl, cyclohexyl, m-tolyl, o-anisyl, p-nitrophenyl, naphthyl, methoxy, 3-sulphophenoxy, 6-bromo- 2-naphthoxy, methylmercapto, phenylmercapto, dimethylamino, b -hydroxyethylamino, disulphophenyl- and disulphonaphthyl-amino, nitrophenylamino and N-methylphenylamino. Preferably R is H and X is Cl and especially when derived from 1,5-disulpho-2-naphthylamine and with 21 H and 2 SO3H. The dyes colour cellulosic materials, e.g. cotton, linen and viscose rayon. Preferably colouring processes are effected in conjunction with an acid-binding agent. Red shades are obtained. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring cellulosic materials in bluish-red shades. Specifications 797,946, 836,248, 838,341 and 847,635 are referred to.
