Abstract

The invention comprises azo dyes of formula R-N=N-Ar-N(X1)X2 where R is a cyanobenzene radicle which may contain alkyl trifluoromethyl, nitro, halogen or further cyano substituents, Ar is a phenylene residue in which -N(X1)X2 is in the para-position to the azo group, X1 is a C1-C5 alkylene group which has a carboxyl group esterified with a C1-C5 unsubstituted alkanol, X2 is -CnH2n+1 and n is 0 to 5 and Ar is free from COOH or SO3H groups. The dyes are made by conventional diazotization and coupling methods from appropriate cyanoanilines coupling being preferred in aqueous acid media. Listed diazo components are 2,4-, 2,5- and 3,4-dicyano-, 3 - chloro - 4 - cyano-, 2 - cyano - 5 - chloro-, 3-and 4-cyano-, 2-cyano-4-nitro-, 2-nitro-4-cyano-, 2,4-dicyano-3,6-dimethyl- and 2-trifluoro-4-cyanoanilines and 2,4-dicyanotoluidine. Specified coupling components are N-phenyl-b -aminopropionic acid methyl ester, N-phenyl-N-methyl-b -aminopropionic acid methyl ester and N-phenylaminoacetic acid methyl ester. The dyes colour polyamide and polyethylene terephthalate fibres. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing the above fibres in red, bordeaux and orange shades.
