[Class 78 (iii)] In friction-grip ratchet jacks the load-sustaining sleeve 3, Figs. 6 and 10, is moved step-by-step up the fixed standard 2 by lifting and retaining gripping-members 9, 10 respectively. On raising the handle 5 the projection 23 turns the member 9 into its non-gripping position and by forcing it downwards against the pressure of the spring 12 causes the casing as a whole to rise on the standard. Meanwhile the rising casing by engaging the pin 19 rotates the retaining member into the non-gripping position, but as soon as the lifting-effort ceases, the falling casing depresses the pin 19 and rotates the member 10 to apply a sustaining grip. Forcible depression of the opposite lug 20, by using a tommy-bar engaging the lug 26 as a fulcrum, allows the load to be lowered. The casing can be pulled bodily up the standard by hand for rough adjustment. The gripping surfaces of the members 9, 10 are bevelled off at the top on one side of the standard and at the bottom on the other side as shown at 17a, 18a, and the two halves are slightly offset as seen in Fig. 10. In one modification the retaining-member is underneath the actuating- member. Modifications in the arrangement of the springs and of the lugs on the lever 5 also are described.
