Abstract
501,554. Lifting-jacks. BOWMAN, G., and SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S. Oct. 21, 1937, No. 28770. [Class 78 (iii)] Friction - ratchet lifting- jacks in which upper and lower friction members slide on a column and bind thereon when tilted, the upper member comprising a load-receiving abutment offset from the column and the lower member forming an abutment for the operating lever, are fitted with a bracket sliding on the column and coupling the two friction members together in spaced relationship. Fig. 1 shows an upper friction member 13 which bears against a collar 32 on a sliding load-supporting member. The latter may be adapted to tit into a bracket 34 fixed on the framework of a motor vehicle. The lower friction member 14 is connected to the coupling bracket 15 by a spring 24 and the lever 28 connects the bracket to the member 13. The operating lever 16 is pivoted to the bracket 15 and linked to the friction member 14. Depression of the lever 16 first causes the member 14 to tilt and bind on the standard 10 and then raises the bracket 15 bodily, thus causing the collar 26 to raise the upper member 14 and the load. On raising the lever 16, the member 14 tilts and supports the load, and the spring 24 raises the member 14 to the new position of bracket 15 ready for another stroke. Depression of the lever 28 rocks the member 13 into its non-gripping position and permits lowering. A ball-mounted foot 12 is fitted to the column. Fig. 2 shows a construction in which the coupling bracket encloses the two friction members 41, 47. Raising of the lever 50 causes the member 47 to tilt and grip and then raises casing 40 bodily and the load carried in the crutch 43. On lowering the lever, member 41 tilts and grips and the spring 49 restores 47 ready for another stroke. Depression of 44 tilts member 41 into non-gripping position for lowering.
