Abstract

512,909. Driving pumps on motor vehicles. PALMER, R. G. March 19, 1938, No. 8507. [Class 79 (ii)] A centrifugal pump 4 on the vehicle is driven through a universal joint 7 by a shaft, 8 having a pulley 9 adapted to be placed in contact with a vehicle wheel 10 so as to be driven therefrom, the shaft having a self-aligning bearing 11 employed to hold the pulley against the wheel tyre when desired. The bearing 11 may be secured in a strap 12 by a pin 13, the strap being adjusted in a fixed bracket 16 by the screw gear 15, 17 so as to cause the pulley to bear with any desired pressure against the wheel. When the device is not in use the bearing 11 is released from the strap 12 and the shaft and pulley are held in the inclined position shown in dotted lines. The pump may be used to either fill or empty a tank on the vehicle and may be used for fire fighting or other purposes.
