[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XXI] Means for removing cuttings from the cutter chain of a mining machine comprise a helical conveyer driven from the machine and operating in a longitudinal direction relative to the direction of advance of the machine and approximately at,-or below, the level of the cutter chain. In Figs. 1 and 2, a carrier C is reversibly fixed, according to the side on which the cutter chain is working, to a gear box D at the rear of the machine A; the conveyer is driven in the same direction in either position and comprises a helix 3 within a casing 2 detachably secured to the carrier C by a sleeve 6. The drive is effected through a coupling at either end of the gear box D, bevel gearing 15, 16, and a train of pinion gearing 18. A plough 9 and cone 8 deflect the cuttings through lateral openings 7. A guard plate 21 forms a stay for the conveyer and a plate 22 guides the cuttings into the housing 2. In Fig. 3, the conveyer is tangential to the cutter chain drive sprocket, the cuttings entering the housing through opening 23; the conveyer may be driven from gear box D through gears in case 26 and deliver through opening 24, or the drive may be effected from the front of the conveyer which may then deliver through the rear of the housing or through lateral openings. In a shortwall machine, the conveyer, with or without housing, is arranged below the gear head transversely of the body of the machine. The helical conveyer may be applied to overcutting machines, a chute delivering cuttings to the conveyer if required. Specifications 329,837, [Class 78 (i)], and 512,443 are referred to.
