Abstract

504,647. Cutting and loading machines for mines. MAYOR & COULSON, Ltd., GALLOWAY, W. S., and LOGAN, W. A. Nov. 26,1937, No. 32609. [Class 68 (i)] A machine for gathering broken-down coal at the coal face, which forms a unit separate from the cutting-machine, is fitted with means for cutting into the coal face at.the roof level, thus forming a continuous shelf or a series of recesses to carry one end of beams for supporting the roof, the beams in question extending laterally across the working and being propped up at their free ends. The Figure shows a loading machine of known type mounted on endlesstread wheels A and comprising a scraper conveyer 2 receiving coal from the oscillating arms 3 and delivering to corves or the like at the rear of the apparatus. A cutter-chain 5. cutter-bar, or disc which can be used to make a continuous recess or a series of triangular openings 12 at the roof of the face, is mounted to slue about a vertical axis and can be raised and lowered by rotating a series of screws 6 simultaneously by hand-operated gear. When cutting the triangular openings 12, the machine will usually be stationary and the cut made by power slueing of the cutter-chain, for which purpose the motor of the loading machine is clutched to worm gearing 8. Specifications 493,946 and 494,186 are referred to, and the Provisional Specification refers to Specification 411,256.
