Abstract
512,335. Locking gas taps. HORSTMANN, J. H. G., and HORSTMANN GEAR CO., Ltd. March 23, 1938, No. 8917. [Class 135] A device for preventing the taps of gas ovens and the like from being turned on when the oven door is closed comprises a spring-pressed member 5 which is depressed by the closing movement of the oven door so as to set or urge a locking device 3 for the tap in the tap-locking position. As shown in Fig. 1, a spring-pressed cam stud 5 mounted in the door frame 6 is connected by a linkage 8, 9, 10 to a lever 11 pivoted on the tap body 1 or other fixed part and movable on opening the oven door 7 to allow a sliding latch 3 to be moved opposite a recess 4 in the D-shaped handle 2 of the tap. In the modification, Fig. 2, separate actuation of the locking bolt 12 is unnecessary as this is carried by the stem of the cam stud 5 and is urged a limited distance towards a recess 13 in the gas cock by a spring 12a. The locking bolt 12 is withdrawn from the recess 13 on opening the oven door 7, but if the cock is closed after the oven door, the bolt 12 yields automatically due to the spring 12c and locks the cock in the closed position so that it cannot be re-opened until the oven door is opened again. In another form a bell crank is interposed between the stud 5 and the locking bolt, but any suitable mechanical, pneumatic, or electrical transmission may be used. According to the Provisional Specification, the lever 11 may itself hold the tap in the off " position.
