Abstract
512,236. Treating textiles. RIDGWAY, WHITTING & BODENSCHATZ, INC. Nov. 25, 1937, Nos. 32501 and 32502. Convention dates, Nov. 27, 1936, and Nov. 1, 1937. [Class 15 (ii)] Textile materials comprising natural cellulose are treated first with a copper sulphate or other copper salt solution, excess solution removed to less than 1 part of copper sulphate per 4 parts cellulose, and then treated with a bath containing ammonia and caustic alkali. Solution strengths are limited to 1-249 gms. CuSO4. 5H2O per litre, 38-263 gms. NH3 per litre and 1-450 gms. NaOH per litre ; the ratio of caustic alkali to cellulose is preferably 1 to 12. The treatment, which is carried out at room temperatures, removes lesser celluloses and impurities without affecting the alpha-cellulose, whereby the material is improved in appearance, handle, hot flexing life, tensile strength, electric insulation and resistance to wrinkling and mildew. The material may be maintained in a stretched condition whilst washed ; and it may also be subsequently mercerized in stretched condition, and maintained stretched until the swelling action of the alkali has been reduced or until the material is dry. In examples, (1) cellulosic textile fibres are wetted with a copper sulphate solution which may contain a wetting agent, centrifuged to double its dry weight, led into a solution of ammonia and caustic soda, centrifuged, stretched and washed, acidified, washed and dried ; (2) as in example (1), except that the material is subjected to mercerizing whilst stretched immediately after the ammonia-caustic soda treatment; (3) raw cotton fibres are treated with copper sulphate solution with or without a wetting agent, centrifuged, treated with an ammonia-caustic soda solution, dried, treated with dilute sulphuric acid, washed, acidified, washed and dried. Specification 468,633 is referred to.
