Abstract
511,862. Actuation of switches. FOSTER INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., and FOSTER, C. E. Feb. 25, 1938, No. 5997. [Class 38 (v)] An electric switch which is operated upon cessation of a stream of fluid such as water or air used for cooling pyrometers or other instruments, has a lever 3 pivoted at 4 with one arm 3b which carries a mercury switch 5 and another arm 3c which carries a beaker 6. Cooling water 7 flows from a pipe 8 into the beaker which empties through a hole 9 of a size not quite sufficient to carry away all the water. The beaker therefore fills and overflows at a lip 6b, and the arm 3 rocks to close the switch 5. Upon diminution or cessation of flow the beaker empties through the hole 9, the arm 3 rocks to the dotted position, and the switch 5 opens and an alarm circuit may be operated. In another arrangement, gas flows through a bellows kept extended by a satisfactory flow, but which closes to operate a switch upon diminution of the flow, by gas escaping from the bellows through a small hole. The time taken to empty the beaker or bellows provides a time delay in the operation of the switch.
