Abstract

571,118. Gas-blast switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BROWN, J. K., PRESCOTT, J. A., and ROWLAND, F. G. Dec. 16, 1943, No. 21116. [Class 38 (v)] The exhaust gas from a nozzle contact 2 is passed through a tube 4 into a chamber 6, the top 5 of which has one or more small-bore tubes 7 having a replaceable small-apertured vent cap 8. A .further cover 9 and perforated wall 10 may be added for use outdoors. The arrangement economizes blast-gas because once the chamber 6 reaches maximum pressure, which it may be arranged to do after only two cycles of current, flow ceases notwithstanding the inlet valve may still be open. The venting from chamber 6 may be delayed by a valve operated in response to opening of the breaker or series isolator, or to operation of a protective device controlling the breaker. The arrangement is also applicable to the operating mechanism of circuit-breakers.
