[Class 38 (v)] Gas-blast circuit-breaker units A complete with operating mechanisms are withdrawable from a gas reservoir E through manholes G opposite exhaust conduits F<2>. Manhole covers G<1> are held on their seatings by gas pressure and by clamping bars G<3> which may be released to lower the covers on to rails G<2>. The removable parts, Fig. 4, can then be withdrawn from insulating exhaust tubes F<4> and plug contacts H, the latter being normally engaged by fingers A‹ on fixed contacts A<5>, A<6>. Each circuit-breaker is operated by opening a valve Fl to actuate a piston B<1> carrying bridging contact fingers A<3>, the blast gases passing through metal nozzles A<7>, a cooler A<4> and deionizing chambers, Fig. 6 (not shown), into the tube F<4>. The arcs are transferred through the nozzles to an electrode connected electrically to the cooler, nozzles and contact A<3> and through a limiting resistance A<1> to one contact H. Three series isolators C on their insulators H<2> are rotated in unison by a crank D<1> and a piston-operated rod D when a coil D<7> or D<8> is energized. Flanges H<5>, J<5>, F<3> on terminal bushings H<4>, J2 and tubes F<4> are held on their seatings by gas pressure, and during operation of the units A, this pressure also holds the coolers A<4> and bodies A<2> on their respective seatings on bodies A<2> and tubes F<4>.
