Abstract
509,304. Grinding-machines. HEALD MACHINE CO. Jan. 10, 1938, No. 736. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1937. Addition to 483,279. [Class 60] The machine described in the parent Specification is modified by the addition of an electrical contact 161, separate from the workpiece and adapted to be engaged by the electrically conductive grinding-wheel 7 to complete the circuit from the transformer 122 through a solenoid 157, whereby a change in the grinding operation is effected. As shown, the change produced causes the wheel 7 to run out of the work, thus stopping the grinding, and for this purpose, the armature 156 of the solenoid engages the arm 155 of a latch 153, Fig. 2, thereby releasing a pivoted arm 152, which, under the action of a spring and through a pin 151, moves a lever 150 pivoted at 149 to lift the reversing dog 17, thereby rendering it ineffective and allowing the machine table to make an extended stroke. The contact 161 may, Fig. 3, be mounted in a contact ring 164 carried by an insulating ring 162 in a groove in the work-chuck 10, the ring 164 being engaged by a brush, or the contact 161 may be in the form of a ring having an internal diameter exactly equal to that of a finished work-piece ; in a further modification, the contact 161 is separate from and external to the chuck.
