Abstract

239,296. Evans, W. E., (Mayer & Schmidt Schleifmaschinen-u. Schmirgel-Werke Akt.- Ges.). June 10, 1924. Twist drills, sharpening.-In a machine for grinding twist drills comprising a horizontallydisposed headstock 19 carrying the. drill-chuck spindle 10, the oscillation of the headstock and the axial movement of the spindle are both effected by a double cam 13 carried by a sleeve provided with clutch teeth at each face and slidable on a key fixed to a sleeve 12 on the spindle 10 which also slidably engages the key so that the cam and spindle are driven when the cam sleeve is moved into engagement with clutch teeth on the face of a bevel wheel 9 loosely mounted on the chuck spindle and driven from. a vertical shaft 8. The cam 13 engages a plunger 17, horizontally disposed in a bearing in the headstock and bearing against stop 32 to oscillate the headstock, and a bell-crank lever 18 pivoted in the headstock and linked to the plunger 17 engages a collar 20 fixed to the spindle 10 and moves it axially forward, the return of the spindle being effected by a spring 11 engaging the collar 20. The headstock is pivoted about the axis of the shaft 8 and is kept in contact with the strop 32 by a weight or tension spring 21 connected at one end to a fixed part of the frame and at the other to a plunger 23, slidable in a fixed casing 22 and carrying a pin 24 projecting downwards and engaging between a lug 25 on the headstock and a fixed plug 26. When the headstock is being oscillated the pin 24 engages an inclined face 27 on the lug 25 and exerts tension on the spring 21 while running on the lateral face of the lug 26; if, however, the headstock is moved so that the pin slides on to the inclined face 28 of the lug 26, the pin runs on the lateral face of the lug 25 concentric with the axis of the headstock which can then be swung freely. The extent of oscillation of the headstock and backing-off of the drill may be varied bv altering the position of the stop 32 which is adjustably carried by a fixed part. of the machine frame. The spindle is locked, for removal or insertion of a drill when the cam is moved out of engagement with the bevel wheel 9, by a pawl 29 pivoted in the headstock and pressed by a spring to engage between the teeth on the face. of the cam sleeve opposite to the bevel wheel 9.
