Abstract
508,541. Heat treating light metals and their alloys. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM. ROESSLER. Dec. 29, 1937, Nos. 36009 and 36010. Convention dates, Dec. 31, 1936 and Feb. 9, 1937. [Class 72] In a process for regulating and maintaining the activity of alkali nitrate and/or alkalinitrate containing melt baths for the heattreatment of light metals and their alloys, the formation or accumulation of disturbing quantitites of alkaline compounds is counteracted by the periodic or gradual addition of acid salts, acid-yielding compounds or other alkali-fixing compounds in quantities sufficient to render the alkaline compounds formed non-detrimental. Examples of such additions are alkali or ammonium metaphosphates, acid phosphates, pyrophosphates, neutral ammonium salts such as the chloride or nitrate or alkali bichromates which must be mixed with other bath constituents, e.g. alkali nitrate, the mixture preferably containing at least 5 parts by weight of other salts, e.g. alkali nitrate, for every 1 part by weight of bichromate. The addition of the salt mixture is effected at temperatures which are not considerably, preferably not more than 100‹ C., above the melting point of the bath.
