Abstract
508,517. Railway - vehicle axles. BAKER, W. S. GRAFF-. Jan. 3, 1938, No. 73. [Class 103 (vi)] A resilient wheel and axle assembly, which may constitute the sole springing of a railway vehicle, comprises a rigid outer cylinder 6 connecting the opposed wheel tyres 7, an inner concentric cylinder 5 rotatable on bearings 4 on a dead axle 1, and rubber, pneumatic or like resilient elements inserted between the cylinders 5, 6. As shown, the resilient elements comprise a number of rubber annuli 10 bonded to flanged bushes 11, 12, which seat in correspondingly flanged rings 14, 15 secured respectively to the cylinders 5, 6. The inner cylinder is preferably supported upon conical or cylindrical roller bearings 4, and may be of uniform diameter, or may be of only slightly larger diameter than the axle 1 at its central portion and have enlargements 16 at its end to accommodate the bearings 4. In place of, or in addition to, the rubber annuli 10, a series of air cushions inflatable to the desired pressure may be located between the cylinders 5, 6.
