Abstract

508,252. Road traffic signals on vehicles. GUSTAFSON, A. S. May 9, 1938, No. 13751. [Class 118 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A switching device for direction indicators for motor cars &c. comprises two members, one or the other of which can be moved into a circuit-closing position by a handle, and is returned into circuit-breaking position by a member moved relatively to the switch by the steering wheel through the medium of a second member which actuates either contact member as required. In the arrangement shown, the contact members consist of strips 11, 11a operated by a handle 2 through a link 12 and connected to one terminal of the circuit through a U-shaped piece 8 with which they both make contact in the circuit-breaking position shown in Fig. 2 by means of spring projections 23. On moving the handle 2, one of the projections 23 engages, the appropriate one of two contacts 7, 7a and is held against the action of a spring 9 and arms 10 which tend to retract the strips 11, 11a and press them laterally against the sides of the casing. The ends of the strips 11, 11a are hooked and are gripped between the hooked ends of a member 4 and a member 6 inside the member 4 and pressed apart from it by a spring 5. To the hub of the steering-wheel is attached a member 3 which, when the circuit is open, is out of contact with the member 4, but if the steering-wheel is turned, and returned when the circuit is closed, comes into contact with the piece 4 as shown in Fig. 4, so as to disengage the projection 23 from the contact and allow the spring 9 to retract the parts into the position shown in Fig. 2.
