Abstract

504,134. Mechanical switches without quick action. QUILLERY, H. P. M. Oct. 26, 1937, No. 29188. Convention date, May 10, 1937. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 29, 1938.] [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] In a switch for the combined control of the lighting and warning devices on a vehicle, a lever 36 carries teeth 45, 46 engaging in ratchets 48, 49 to rotate a plate 12 to alter the lighting, the lever being returned to its central position by a spring 42. The lever moves in a T- shaped slot, so that when in its central position it may be depressed to give a warning signal, the signal being different for different positions of the contact plate 12, and consisting of an audible signal or a change in the vehicle lighting. The battery potential is applied over spring 31 to contact strip 27 connected to a strip 22 wiping over contact studs (not shown) on base-plate 1 and in the four positions of the plate 12 gives, respectively, no effect, lighting of the side lamps, dipped head lamps and head lamps. Upon the lever 36 being depressed, the connection is broken with strip 27 and made to strip 28 connected to contact strip 23 to complete circuits to the town audible device, the dipped head lamps, the head lamps and the dipped head lamps respectively. When the lever 36 is further depressed, spring 31 contacts with terminal 10 connected to the road warning device. The contact strip 21 in the three last positions completes a circuit to the rear lamp. A window (not shown) is provided in the casing to indicate the position of the lighting switch. A spring-urged ball within the cylinder 19 co-operates with grooves on plate 1 to locate the plate 12. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a combined switch mounted on the steering column, Fig. 5 (Cancelled), the lever 16 being rotatable to change the vehicle lighting, and upon the lever 12 being raised contacts A1, 3 close to give an audible warning or effect a change in the vehicle lighting. Further raising of the lever closes contacts A2, 9 to complete the circuit of the road warning device. In a further modification, the plates 1, 22 are slotted and the casing 20 is in two parts so that the device may be applied to the column without removing the steering wheel. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
