Abstract
505,951. Thermionic cathodes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTUR. ING CO. Aug. 25, 1938, No. 25012. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] A cathode comprises a core formed from ribbon material so shaped as to provide a passage extending therethrough which increases in cross-sectional area along part or the whole of its length. In the form shown, the cathode core 7 is formed by winding up into a helix a tapered nickel or nickel-cobalt ribbon coated with barium and strontium oxides. The core is assembled with a heater 5 embedded in a refractory coating 8 surrounded by metallic sleeves 9, 11 supporting the cathode from the envelope 1 and the sleeve 11 may have a reflecting coating. The tube may contain mercury 12 or a permanent gas and may have fluid cooled surfaces above the cathode. The control electrode 3 may be of carbonized nickel mesh wires À02 centimetres in diameter and be spaced two centimetres from the face of the anode 2. Suitable dimensions of the cathode are given.
