Abstract
387,275. Cathode-ray tubes. INTERNATIONAL GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Inc., 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitats-Ges. ; 2, Friedrich Karl-Ufer, Berlin.) Sept. 9, 1932, No. 25191. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] An indirectly heated cathode for a cathode-ray tube comprises a hollow metal cylinder 1, Fig. 1, which is divided transversely of its axis by a partition 2 into two portions in the upper of which is arranged a cathode 3 provided with a surface coating of highly emissive material such as barium oxide, while the lower portion contains a heating device arranged in such a manner that the magnetic field of its winding 4 is substantially in the direction of the axis of the cathode ray. The cathode 3 may be in the form of a metal strip folded into a series of zig-zags, the strip in the example being folded in this manner and then wound into a spiral. The upper end of the heating spiral 4 is connected to the bottom of the partition 2, its lower end being led through an aperture in the bottom plate of the cylinder. The other leading-in wire 5 is connected to the cylinder 1. To reduce the external heating effect of the cathode an outer nickel cylinder 8, Fig. 3, with a polished interior wall may surround the cylinder 1, and may be insulated therefrom to enable it to be used as a control grid with a separate leading-in conductor 9. The wall of the cylinder 8 is extended beyond that of cylinder 1 to provide an adequate controlling effect.
