Abstract
505,625. Laminated wood. QUINN, P. Nov. 11, 1937, No. 30971. [Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII, V, and XXXIII] A composite article such as an airscrew blade consists of laminµ of wood and, if desired, sheet metal united by layers of artificial rubber e.g. polymerized butadiene, and an external coating of artificial rubber forming with the bonding layers a complete matrix of artificial rubber. A composite sheet may be built up from alternate lavers of wood and artificial rubber, the airscrew blades being cut from the sheet and finally coated with artificial rubber. Alternatively, the blade may be moulded from laminµ of wood with alternate artificial rubber layers, and vulcanized without pressure. A foundation 1 of metal, shaped to give adequate strength at the root 3 of the blade, may be provided on each side with wood laminae 5 and with intermediate laminse 6 of synthetic rubber, the whole blade being also encased in a sheath 7 of synthetic rubber. The wood laminµ may be impregnated with a solution of synthetic rubber. Other filling-materials such as cotton or glass fibres may be present in the blade.
