Abstract

504,853. Self-locking bolts &c. SIMMONDS, O. E., and SIMMONDS DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, Ltd. Jan. 27, 1938, No. 2595. [Class 89 (i)] The shank 1 of a self-locking bolt or like externally screwthreaded member is formed with one or more shallow longitudinal slots 2 which do not embrace the longitudinal axis of the bolt and each of which houses an inset 3 of vulcanized fibre or like elastic material the outer side of which extends beyond the inner edge of the screw-threads of the bolt but preferably not beyond the outer edge of such screw-threads, each slot and inset being formed with interengaging surfaces such that the inset is keyed to the shank against unintentional withdrawal therefrom laterally, the outer side of the inset subtending at the bolt axis an angle which is less than 90‹. In cross-section the inset may be of substantially trapezoidal form or in the form of a major segment of a circle. The slots extend throughout or substantially throughout the entire screw-threaded part of the shank, and they may be disposed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bolt or diagonally thereto so as to extend partly or wholly around its periphery. Each inset may comprise a plurality of strips of elastic material.
