Abstract

302,969. Hartley, W. Sept. 23, 1927. Locking nuts.-A lock-nut is provided with a continuous slot extending through the flats and completely across the nut from one face to the other and crossing at least two Bats of the nut. The bearing face of the nut is also slightly inclined. The, nut 1 is provided with a continuous spiral slot 2 which extends into and through the flats of the nut and terminates at the top on the same flat as at the, beginning. The direction of the slot is preferably contra-clockwise when viewed from the bearing face 3, the thin inclined edge 4 of the spiral trailing over the work surface tending to close the slot for locking the nut. The slot may be inclined also to the axis of the nut and instead of extending around all the flats, may cross a lesser number. As an alternative the slot may be made up of a portion perpendicular to the axis of the nut and completed by portions parallel to the axis extending to the inside and outside faces.
