Abstract
Loosening of heavy goods vehicle wheel nuts (6) is prevented by renewable locking strip(s) (3) inserted in a recess(es) in the screwthread (2) of a wheel stud (1) so as to project beyond the screwthread (2) into gripping engagement with the screwthread (5) to cause the locking effect. The strip (3) is of man made material.
Description
This invention relates to renewable thread locking device for retaining heavy goods vehicles wheel nuts and other critical components.
Lost road wheels due to loosening of wheel nuts on heavy goods vehicles and other commercial road vehicles is verv dangerous to the vehicle involved along with being a danger to other road users.
Prevention of lost road wheels due to loosening of wheel nuts is achieved by renewable strip(s) inserted in to a recess(es) formed in the threaded portion of the wheel stud, and projecting beyond the screwthread of the wheel stud thus binding with the screwthread of the wheel nut and causing the locking effect.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the locking strip(s) projecting beyond the screwthread of the wheel stud.
:-Figure 2 shows the recess(es) in the wheel stud in which the locking strip(S) sit.
:-Figure 3 shows a renewable locking strip of man made material.
Referring to the drawing the thread locking device for heavy goods vehicles wheel nuts and other critical components, comprises a wheel stud(s) 1 with recess(es) 4 formed in to the threaded portion 2 of the wheel stud 1, into which renewable strip(s) of man made material 3 are inserted. The strip(s) 3 project beyond the screwthread 2 (figure 1) of the wheel stud 1 so as to engage in the screw thread 5 of the wheel nut 6, causing the man made material strip(s) 3 to bind with the wheel nut screw thread 5 causing the locking effect. When changing a wheel nut 6 fitted with this device it is a matter of replacing the renewable strip(s) of man made material 3 in the recess(es) 4 of the wheel stud 1, in order to retain the locking effect.
Claims (4)
1 Prevention of lost road wheel nuts is achieved by renewable strip(s) of man made material inserted in to a recess(es) formed in the threaded portion of the wheel stud and projecting beyond the screwthread of the wheel stud. So as to engage and bind in the screwthread of the wheel nut causing the locking effect.
2 Renewable thread locking device for retaining heavy goods vehicle wheel nuts and other critical components as claimed in claim 1 where as when a wheel nut is removed from a wheel stud with the device fitted only the man made material strip(s) needs to be replaced to achieve the locking effect one more.
3 Exsisting heavy goods vehicle wheel studs could be converted to accept renewable strip(s) of man made material and gain the thread locking effect.
4 A renewable thread locking device for retaining heavy goods vehicle wheel nuts and other critical components as described herein with reference to figures 1 - 3 of the accompanying drawing.
