Abstract

An anti-theft screw-threaded nut assembly consists of a hexagon headed nut 3 containing a circumferential groove 4 in which is located a spring ring 5 which projects from the nut, and a cover 6 located over the nut which has a closed end and includes an internal groove 7 corresponding to the groove 4 in the nut and retained in position by co-operation of its groove 7 with the spring ring 5, the cover 6 being rotatable relative to the nut 3. The closed end of the cover includes a threaded aperture 9 adapted to receive a bolt 8 which bears against the end of stud 2 threaded into nut 3 to cause the cover 6 to be pulled off the nut 3. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Anti-theft wheel nut The present invention relates to a screw threaded nut assembly equipped with anti-theft means and is especially suitable for use in retaining road wheels on vehicle axles.
The high cost of wheels and tyres has made the theft thereof profitable especially in the case of wheels for large vehicles such as lorries or trailers.
Various means have been suggested for locking the wheel nuts onto their studs, to prevent unauthorised removal, for example lockingwheel nuts, but these tend to be expensive and are also likely to become jammed as a result of the ingress of dirt and moisture.
We have now found a convenient method for rendering a wheel proof against casual unauthorised attempts at removal for the purposes oftheft.
Accordingly, therefore, the present invention provides a screw threaded nut assembly comprising: a) a body portion having an internal bore screw threaded to receive a complimentary screw threaded bolt or stud, means to enable the nut to be moved axially along the thread of the said bolt or stud and a circumferential groove formed in the outside thereof coaxially with the said bore; b) a cover extending around the said nut and over one end thereof said cover including an inner circumferential groove located opposite to the groove in said nut and means to permit removal ofthe cover from said nut.
c) means contained in one said groove and extending outwardly from the periphery thereof for cooperation with the other said groove to retain the cover in position overthe nut.
Preferably, in use, the cover is dimensioned to extend to touch the wheel to provide minimum clearance between the wheel and the cover and is also rotatable around the nut.
The means to enable the nut to be moved axially along the thread of the bolt or stud will normally comprise flattened portions on the outside of the said body, said portions being arranged to cooperate with a spanner or other means, e.g. a spider in the case of wheel nuts, for effecting said movement.
The means contained in the groove formed in the outside of said nut body may conveniently comprise a spring ring dimensioned such that some radial movement thereof in the said groove is allowed.
The means to permit removal of the cover from the said nut may conveniently comprise a threaded aperture formed in the top of the cover and coaxially therewith, into which a threaded bolt can be inserted to cause said cover to be pulled off from the said nut.
The invention will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing. The drawing is a diagrammatic representation of a cross section of one assembly according to the present invention applied to the stud of a wheel.
In the drawing a wheel 1 contains an outwardly extending screw threaded stud 2. The wheel is retained on the stud by a hexagon shaped nut 3 which is tightened against the wheel in a conventional manner using a spider or other means. A groove 4 is formed circumferentially in the nut outer surface and contains a spring ring 5 which projects from the surface of the nut and is sufficiently oversize to allow some radial movement within the groove.
A cover 6 includes a groove 7 formed within the inner wall thereof and an aperture 9 is screw threaded to receive a bolt 8. Groove 7 co-operates with the projecting portion of the spring ring 5 to retain the cover 6 in position on the nut 3.
As shown in the drawing the cover is freely rotatable about the nut and therefore the nut cannot be removed from the stud until the cover has first been removed. Because the ends of the cover are in contact with the wheel 1 there is minimal space available for a tool to be inserted to force the cover over the spring ring 5. When it is desired to remove the cover the bolt 8 is inserted through the aperture 9 and screwed down onto the stud forcing groove 7 over the spring ring 5 to release the cover.
For insertion over the nut the reverse procedure is used, the nut is first tightened onto the wheel and then the cover (without the bolt 8) forced over the spring ring 5 to be located in position in groove 7.
The axially extending dimension of the inner circumferential groove in the cover may be made adjustable to allow for variations in the manufacture of original wheels and the cone nut seating used on many wheels. This adjustability may be achieved by forming the outermost radially directed wall of the groove from a screwed ring insert. A shoulder, to form the other wall of the groove, is formed in the cover by boring out to the required groove depth.
The bored out portion is tapped to apply a screw thread thereto and a ring, having a complimentary screw thread and a thickness equal to the groove depth, inserted to form the said outermost wall of the groove. Correct positioning of the ring ensures that the inner end of the cover is flush against the wheel when in use.
1. Ascrew-threaded nut assembly comprising a) a body portion having an internal bore screw threaded to receive a compilmentary~screw- threaded bolt or stud, means to enable the nut to be moved axially along the thread of the said bolt or stud and a circumferential groove formed in the outside surface thereof; b) a cover extending around said nut and over one end thereof; said cover including an inner circumferential groove positioned for alignment with the groove in said nut and means to permit removal of the said cover from said nut, c) means contained in one said groove and extending outwardly from the periphery thereof for cooperation with the other said groove to retain the cover in position over the nut.
