[Class 75 (iv)] [Also in Groups XV and XVIII] A picture, sign, or other surface G is illuminated by lamps L disposed within a casing D which projects a flat beam horizontally on to a mirror E arranged to reflect the beam along and over the surface G, slightly inclined mirrors H being provided along the periphery of the surface so as to reflect back thereto light which would otherwise be lost. The invention is described as applied to the illumination. of a picture G mounted in a frame A and covered by a sheet of glass B separated from the picture by a space S, the casing D extending along the whole or the greater part of the upper member of the frame A. Fig. 1 shows a construction in which the mirrors H are arranged in the space S and the mirror E is fitted in the frame A to project the beam into this space ; the upper side C of the casing D is hinged to provide access to the lamps. In a modification, the mirror E and the lamp casing D are carried by a sub-frame which is secured to the rear of the main frame A. Fig. 3 shows a further construction in which a casing D, fitted with a hinged reflector R, is disposed above the front part of the frame A, the mirror E being arranged to project the beam through a slot K in the frame. Passage of heat to the surface G is prevented by a glass plate F, while, in the form shown in Fig. 3, there are provided in addition vents J in the casing D. The mirror E may be replaced by a prism and instead of the lamps L there may be employed a tubular silvered lamp in which a longitudinal strip of the silvering is removed to permit the emission of a, thin restricted beam of light in the desired direction.
