The invention relates to advertising devices in which two sets of objects, printed matter, pictures or other things seem to appear alternately in the same place.
The principal object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this nature which is of extreme simplicity, compact, economical to manufacture and eflicient in operation.
Other objects and advantages will become ap- 10 parent as this specification proceeds. Referring to the drawings forming a part thereof:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line I of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view; and 15 Figs. 3 and 4 are front elevations illustrating the two diiferent effects produced as viewed by a spectator.
Referring again to said drawings the device comprises a cabinet having side walls 5, a rear wall 6, a bottom wall I and a top wall 8. A sheet of transparent darkened material 9 is angularly disposed between the side walls 5 and divides the cabinet into two compartments l and II. The lower front portion of the cabinet is open so that spectators may readily view the interior thereof. The forward .lower edge of the sheet 9 rests against a flange or moulding surrounding the open front of the cabinet and the rear upper edge of the sheet is supported on an angularly disposed ledge I; which forms part of a partition extending across the upper region of the cabinet. As heretofore stated the sheet 9 ismade of a transparent darkened material. This might be dark colored glass or any other darkened transparent material. The fact of the transparent material being darkened adds greatly to the efliciency of the device both in acting as a reflector and as a transparent medium.
Located above the sheet 9 and spaced from the 40 top wall 8 and substantially parallel thereto is a transparent supporting member l3 forming another compartment M. In the rear part of the compartment l4 abovethe transparent supporting member l3 and the darkened transparent 45 member 9 is an illuminating means IS. The illuminating means, as illustrated, comprises a pair of incandescent bulbs. The objects to be reflected on the plate 9 are suitably located on the supporting member l3 as shown in Figs. 1
50 and 2. With the compartment il in darkness and the illuminating means IS in operation the objects will be reflected on the darkened tramp parent sheet 9 as shown in Fig. 3, the sheet 9 at this time functioning as a mirror.
55 The top wall 8 or a substantial part thereof is preferably made in the form of a slide or removable member and has a picture I 6 on its under side. Obviously advertising matter or any other printed matter might be substituted for the picture. When the illuminating means I is functioning the picture It will be reflected on the member 9 behind the bottle and glass as illustrated in Fig. 3.
An additional effect may be provided by vertically disposing a sheet of translucent material 10 I! in the forward part of the compartment II- and horizontally disposing a strip l8 of similar material which may carry suitable lettering. When this is reflected as shown in Fig. 3 it gives the effect of a platform. Obviously the com partment l4 lends itself to the accommodation of any desired objects arranged as one may see fit in order to produce varying effects.
The forward wall of the compartment II which is in line with the open end of the cabinetis provided with a member I9 which is adapted to carry suitable advertising. This advertising will appear when the illuminating means I5 is functioning.
Angularly disposed mirrors 20 and 2| are positioned in the rear part of the compartment l4 to intensify the light given from the illuminating means i5. These mirrors may be omitted if desired. Openings 22 may be provided in'the top wall 8 for ventilating purposes.
The bottom wall 1 acts as a platform on which objects are placed to be viewed through the darkened transparent sheet 9 at the proper time. The objects illustrated in this instance are a tray and a bottle. 35.
Illuminating means 23 are provided for the compartment 11. As illustrated this means may comprise a pair of incandescent bulbs. The back 6 of the cabinet is provided with a slide or removable member 24 which carries a picture or other suitable printed matter 25. When the compartment I0 is in darkness and the illuminating means 23 is functioning the bottle and tray and the picture 25 may be viewed directly through the darkened transparent member 9 as illustrated in Fig. 4. v
An extension 26 is located at the upper rear portion of the cabinet. The front Wall 217 of this extension is formed of a member adapted to carry suitable advertising matter and this advertising matter will appear when the illuminating means 23 is functioning.
Means are provided for alternately operating the illuminating means l5 and 23. This means comprises a flicker mechanism which is well known in the art and it is not thought necessary to illustrate in detail. The casing 28 encloses such a mechanism.
In order that the device operate more efllciently it has been found desirable to make the illuminating means 23 by which the objects are seen directly of substantially greater candle power than that of the illuminating means l5 which reflects the objects. Due to thefact of using a darkened transparent material an ideal-mirror results when the illuminating means I5 is functionlng and the bulbs can therefore be of a low candle power. the same effect to the eye when the objects are being vieweddirectly and the illuminating means 23 is functioning it is desirable to make these bulbs of a much greater candle power.
Changes in details oi construction and arrangements of parts may be made by one skilled-in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
- I claim:
1. An advertising device having in combination a cabinet comprising side walls, a bottom wall, a top wall and a rear wall, said top wall comprising a removable member upon which a picture or other indicia maybe carried and a removable part in said rear wall upon which a picture or other indicia may be carried, a sheet of transparent darkened material angularly disposed between said side walls and dividing said cabinet into two compartments, a transparent member for supporting articles to be displayed, said transparent supporting member being spaced from and substantially parallel with said top wall, illuminating means above and toward the rear upper end of said sheet of darkened transparent material and said transparent supporting member, other illuminating means on the opposite side of said sheet of darkened transparent material, and means for alternately operating said illuminating means.
2. An advertising device having in combination a cabinet comprising side walls, a bottom wall,
In order to procure substantiallya top wall and a rearwall, a sheet or transparent darkened material angularly disposed between said side walls and dividing said cabinet into two compartments, a transparent member parent material and said transparent supporting member, other illuminating means on the op- .posite s'ideoi said sheet of darkened transparent .front wall. of said extension being formed of a tion a cabinet comprising side walls, a bottom wall, a top wall and. a rear wall, said top wall comprising a removable member upon which a picture or other indicia may be carried and a removable part in said rear wall upon which a picture or other indicia may be carried, a sheet of transparent darkened material angularly disposed between said'side walls and dividing said cabinet into two compartments, a transparent member for supporting articles to be displayed, said transparent supporting member being spaced from and substantially parallel with said top wall, a member adapted to carry advertising and forming a front wall for the compartment formed by said top wall and said transparent supporting member, illuminating means above and toward the rear upper end of said sheet of darkened transparent material and said transparent supporting member, other illuminating means on the opposite side or said sheet of darkened transparent said illuminating means.
