503,186. Fireproofing rubber. WITUSKI, T. Oct. 3, 1938, No. 28701. Convention date, June 15. [Class 70] Natural or artificial rubber is fireproofed by incorporating therein a mixture of a metal or metalloid chloride and a metal or metalloid oxide to form an oxychloride compound. The rubber is preferably first purified. The chloride and oxide may be incorporated in solid rubber but they are preferably incorporated in an aqueous dispersion or solution of the rubber, e.g. a solution in carbon.tetrachloride or tetrachlorethylene with or without benzene. Chlorides specified are those of magnesium, tin, zinc and ammonia ; hygroscopic chlorides are preferably employed but if a non-hygroscopic chloride is used it is usually necessary to have water present. Oxides specified are those of magnesium and zinc; the oxide may be replaced in part by talc. If the chloride and oxide are incorporated in a dispersion of rubber, an alkaline solution is preferably first added to the dispersion to avoid coagulation ; suitable alkaline solutions are an aqueous solution containing borax and ammonia or a solution in tetrachlorethylene or carbon tetrachloride and benzene of caustic soda, potassium silicate, sodium thiosulphate and hydrogen peroxide.
