Abstract

502,413. Plywood and like sheets. JABLONSKY, B. Sept. 13, 1937, No. 24898. [Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Plywood is formed from two or more plies which are separately compressed to increase their density and then cemented together under a low pressure with the directions of adjacent plies extending transversely to one another. The individual plies are compressed at a temperature below that at which scorching of the wood occurs, and are not impregnated with a polymerizable product. One or more of the plies may consist of a number of veneers cemented together with their fibres parallel, and under a pressure sufficient to compress and densify them, synthetic resin films being preferably employed for cementing the veneers, and a cold glue for subsequently joining the plies. The density of the plies may be increased at parts; such as the edges, where extra strength is required by interleaving strips of veneer between the veneer sheets at these parts before compression, or by the use of different pressures at different places. Papyrus stalks, bamboo, straw, reeds, and like vegetable fibres compressed together with a binding agent, and with their fibres parallel, may be used in place of wood to form the individual plies.
