Abstract

502,070. Flexible - tube engines. LYON, H. L. July 30,1938, No. 22770. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotor 9 carries a flexible tube 18 in a groove 20 and a wheel 33, in vertically-slidable bearing boxes 5, presses on the tube. The ends of the tube 18 are secured to nipples 14, 15 which communicate with bores, 11, 12 in the hollow shaft 8. Inlet and exhaust pipes 28, 29, for the working fluid, which may be steam, compressed air, or water under pressure, are coupled to the bores. The fluid presses against the constriction 41 and causes the rotors 9, 33 to rotate. Weights 48 may be placed in a pan 47, to add to the weight of the wheel 33. Power may be taken off either shafts 8, 34. The engine is reversed by reversing the direction of fluid flow. In a modification, the rotor shafts are arranged in a horizontal plane, the rotors being geared together. End screws are rotated to adjust the pressure of the wheel 33 on the tube. A cam on the end of the shaft 8 causes an inlet valve to be closed while the bends in the tube (leading to and from the hollow shaft) are being pressed upon by the wheel 33.
