502,061. Chlorinated hydrocarbons. CONSORTIUM FUR ELEKTROCHEMISCHE INDUSTRIE CES. April 19, 1038, No. 11668. Convention date, April 17, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] A carbon chloride, C4Cl6, is prepared by treating hexachlorbutene simultaneously or successively with catalysts which split off hydrogen chloride, i.e. chlorides of iron, aluminium, manganese or cobalt, and with chlorine, preferably in the presence of chlorine carriers. In examples: (1) hexachlorbutene is heated with ferric chloride to give C4HCl5, presumably pentachlorbutadiene, antimony trichloride is added and chlorine passed in giving heptachlorbutene, C4HCl7 ; the temperature is finally raised to split off hydrogen chloride giving C4Cl6; (2) hexachlorbutene is treated with antimony trichloride and chlorine to form octachlorbutane which is heated with ferric chloride to give C4Cl6; (3) hexachlorbutene is heated with ferric chloride and antimony trichloride and chlorine to yield C4Cl6.
