Abstract

501,078. Hoods for vehicles. SALMONS, G., and BALLS, A. H.DALBY. Oct. 23, 1937, Nos. 28996 and 31987. [Class 108 (i)] Helates to foldable hoods of the type in which a loose hood la secured at the rear end - to the rear hood 1 and rear cross-rail 3 and at its forward end to a loose front rail 9 engageable on the front pillars or windscreen frame is employed, and consists in the provision of hinged or rockable members 8 on a part of the frame so arranged that when in the raised position, the loose front rail can be temporarily engaged therewith, and by rocking the members downwards the rail 9 can be positioned with the loose hood taut. Cant rails 4 are hinged at the ends of the cross rail 3, their free ends being provided each with a slotted plate to engage a headed pin 6a when the cant rails are opened out. The side edges of the loose hood are provided with strainer wires 10 connected to a spring 11. The arms 8 are pivoted to the cant rails above the operative position of the wire, so that the tension of the wire tends to keep the rail 9 down. An incline 7c and stop pin 7b co-operate with web arm 8. Tapered ends of the arms are engaged in sockets in the rail 9 when the hood is to be closed. The loose rail is also positively held down by tapered wing nuts carried by the rail 9 engaging slots in plates secured to the windscreen frame. Midway between the rails 3, 9 the hood carries a hoop stick 22 having at each end a two part member 22a, 22b, the first part being hinged to the second and urged to operative position by a flat spring 24. A hook 24 near the end of the composite stick engages a rubber covered stop 26 on the cant rail. A modified hoop-stick is in one piece connected by inclined struts to the cant rails.
