Abstract

500,765. Ethers and ether - esters. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. Jan. 22, 1938, No. 2193. Convention date, July 9, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Ether-esters of polyhydric alcohols are made bv boiling a mixture containing a polyhydric alcohol, a carboxylic acid in amount insufficient to esterify all the hydroxyl groups, a mutual solvent for the acid and alcohol, a water entrainer of limited miscibility with water and sulphuric acid or a sulphonic acid, and distilling until the water expelled is more than that due to esterification. Instead of using a polyhydric alcohol and acid, a partial ester of the alcohol may be employed. If unesterified alcohol in excess of that necessary to form the partial ester is present, it becomes etherified with itself or with another alcohol such as a monohydric alcohol which may be present. Suitable water entrainers are benzene, toluene and xylene and a suitable mutual solvent is phenol. The ether-ester may be hydrolysed to obtain the ether. In examples there are employed : (1) stearic acid, glycerol, phenol, toluene, and sulphuric acid ; and (2) glycerol mono-oleate, glycerol, toluene, phenol, and sulphuric acid. In the second example, the product is saponified by heating with water in an autoclave or by boiling with caustic soda to saponify the ester groups, the product being polyglycerols.
