Abstract

500,606. Hydraulic transmission of power. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and GATES, G. R. G. Dec. 6, 1937, No. 33753. [Class 69 (ii)] In a liquid pressure master cylinder unit, the piston is of the form comprising an outer shell 22 having the usual packing means 35 co-operating with the cylinder 12, and an inner member 23 which has a limited axial freedom relative to the shell and serves to transmit actuating force to said shell .when the piston is operative, at the same time closing a breathing passage in said shell so as to enable liquid pressure to be built up in the unit ; an annular packing member 48 of resilient material is interposed between the shell and the inner member, and has an undercut circular lip 50 which is acted upon by the liquid to preventsaid liquid from passing the piston when the latter is operative. The packing member 48 is initially shaped so that the extremity of the lip 50 is the first part of the packing'member, which is carried by the inner member 23, to come into contact with the outer shell 22 when the lost-motion is taken up- The passages 40 in the outer shell 22 may diverge towards the working space so that inflowing liquid passes rapidly along the surface of the cylinder and disturbs any air or gas that may have accumulated there.
