Abstract

684,621. Valves. AKTIEBOLAGET KARLSTADS MEKANISKA WERKSTAD. Sept. 24, 1951 [Oct. 4, 1950], No. 22315/51. Class 135. A valve consisting of a tubular obturating member 23 rotatable in a substantially spherical housing 35 is provided with a seal comprising a slidable sleeve 31 which contacts the member 23 along an annular surface and which is provided with packing rings 53, 59 of different diameters in sliding contact with the valve housing. An outwardly-extending flange 43 between the packing rings also slides against the valve housing and can be acted upon by water under pressure directed through passages 69, 71 against one face or the other of the flange according to whether it is desired to press the sealing sleeve against the obturating member after the latter has been closed, or to withdraw the sleeve from contact with the member 23 when it is desired to open the latter. The sliding surface of flange 43 is packed by rings 55, 57. The various packing rings 53, 55, 57, 59 are of rubber and may be pressed against metal linings 47, 49, 51 on the opposing surfaces by water under pressure supplied through bores in the sealing sleeve.
