611,357. Seals. LINK-BELT CO. April 29, 1946, No. 12882. Convention date, Feb. 1. [Class 122 (v)] A seal for a dryer or cooler having a rotary annular-walled cylinder 23, 25, and a stationary distributor head 18 for delivering fluid to the rotary cylinder, the head 18 having annular walls 24 and 26 coaxial with the cylinder walls 23 and 25, consists of an annular labyrinth packing carried either by the cylinder or the distributor head and an annular floating sealing means for preventing the escape of fluid between the cylinder and the distributor head. The seal structure consists of a labyrinth seal ring 29 welded to the head 18 and a labyrinth seal band 31 welded to a filler member 32 which is itself welded to the rotatable cylinder. A pair of floating rings 33 and 34 and a keeper band 37 house a packing ring 38 which bears tightly against the labyrinth seal band 31 to prevent leakage of fluid between the ring 38 and the band 31. Between the ring 29 and the floating ring 33, sealing rings 39, secured to the ring 33 by bolts 40, are provided. Driving pins 41, welded to the floating ring 33 and passing through openings in the ring 34, cause the latter to rotate with the cylinder. Spring pressure is provided to ensure that the sealing rings 39 will be forced against the ring 29 and also that the ring 34 will be forced towards its associated floating ring 33 to compress the packing ring 38 against the labyrinth seal band 31. The above description applies to the outer sealing structure. A similar structure is employed for the inner seal.
