Abstract

500,347. Magnetos. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. May 6, 1937, No. 12923. Convention date, May 7, 1936. [Class 35] A magneto, particularly for ignition in internal-combustion engines comprises a rotary cylindrical permanent magnet 16 having at the ends polar members r7, 18 with a rounded polygonal perimeter, each polar member occupying the major part of and being confined to half the length of the rotor, and a stator 4 having a pair of pole elements 5, 6 each of which has a continuous shoe extending substantially the whole length of the rotor and arranged to co-operate simultaneously with a rounded portion of one and then of the other of the polar members alternately. The laminated polar members 17, 18 as shown are square with rounded corners and are held non rotatably on a squared portion of the rotor shaft by end plates 22, 23, having square central openings. The rotor assembly which also includes a centring ring 28 for the polar members surrounding the magnet is held on the spindle between a ring 29 bearing against a shoulder 31 and a ring 32 screwed on to the spindle and secured by rivets. Each stator polepiece has two polar projections 34, 35 spaced to co-operate simultaneously with two rounded lobes 24 or 25 of the rotor poles. The elements 17, 18 are angularly displaced by 45‹ so that eight flux reversals are produced per revolution of the rotor.
