Abstract

499,777. Friction clutches. LINDSAY, H. July 29, 1937, No. 20959. [Class 80 (ii)] An annular rim 1, formed on one clutch member, is adapted to be gripped between pairs of shoes 3 and 4 pivoted at their ends on pins 5 and 6 secured in the other clutch member 14, the shoes of each pair being actuated, from a slidable operating sleeve 17, by lever and link mechanism mounted on an individual segmental plate 13 secured to the member 14 over an aperture therein. By detaching the appropriate plate 13, the corresponding inner shoe 3 is accessible through the aperture. The actuating mechanism comprises a lever 16, the fulcrum 19 of which is formed on a bolt 20 adjustable in the plate 13 and which is connected by a link 18 to the sleeve 17 and by a link 15 to a lever 11, the latter being fulcrumed on the plate 13 and being connected to the shoes 3 and 4 by links 9 and 10. The outer shoes 4 are restrained against axial movement on their pivot pins 6 by split pins, and they may interengage by tongues 22 and grooves 23 as shown in the lower part of Fig. 6. The inner shoes 3 have set-screws 24 engaging recesses in their pivot pins 5 to prevent axial movement. According to the Provisional Specification, the pivot pins for the inner shoes are secured to the segmental plates.
