Abstract

524,853. Friction clutches. STANLEY, G. E. Feb. 9, 1939, No. 4258. [Classes 80 (ii)] A plate clutch includes a presser-plate 13 in driving connection with the driving member 11, coil springs 19 acting between the driving member and a number of arms 15 mounted on the driving member, abutments 21 interposed between the arms 15 and the presser-plate, so that the presser plate is biassed in the engaging direction by the springs 19, and means by which the pressure of the springs can be removed at will for effecting disengagement of the clutch, these means being supported by the arms 15 and serving to increase the engaging pressure under centrifugal action. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the presser-plate 13 slides on axially extending pins 12 secured to the driving casing 11. The arms 15 are twin-spring arms bolted at 17 to the casing 11 and bear at their outer ends against the springs 19 in recesses 18 in the casing. The disengaging means consists of pins 20 secured to the spring arms by bolts 21, the heads of which form abutments between the spring arms and the presser-plate. Each pin 20 is hinged to a withdrawal lever 22, the inner end of which coacts with a thrust ring 23 sliding on the pins 12 as described in Specification 505,841. A fulcrum for the lever is formed by a pin 24 with rounded ends engaged in sockets on the casing and the lever, lateral movement of the lever being prevented by a pair of ears 25 on the casing. The driving effect of the clutch is assisted by the centrifugal effect of the pins 20. In a modification, the levers' 22 are directly hinged on the driving casing and slidingly engage heads on the outer ends of the pins 20. In another modification, the spring arms are replaced by relatively rigid arms pivoted on the casing at their inner ends and slidable on the pins 12 with slight clearance to allow of rocking within limits, an abutment 29 on each pin limiting the sliding movement. Specifications 422,816 and 468,575 also are referred to.
