[Class 38 (iii)] Varying E.M.F.-In a Ward Leonard system for the elevating or traversing movements of guns, the generator field d is supplied from an exciter C driven by a manually operable control wheel B, in different directions and at varying speeds to determine the direction and speed of operation of the motor A supplied from the generator D, and the exciter has a field winding c supplied from a source c<1>, and an additional field winding c<2> energized in series with the motor and generator armatures. The connections of the field c<2> are reversed by means of a switch c<3> when the direction of the hand wheel B is changed.
