[Class 44] A fastening for suit cases &c. which secures the lid even if not fully closed, comprises a tongue 2 pivotally carried by a plate 21 secured to the lid and adapted to enter a slot 16 in a casing 1 secured to the body of the case, where it is held by a catch engaging one or other of a number of ratchet teeth formed on one edge of a plate 7 carried by the tongue. As shown, the untoothed edge is guided by a fixed abutment 8, the toothed edge being engaged by a detent 10 pivoted at 17 and loaded by spring 14. A pivotally and slidably mounted member 20 carries a stud 12 which is normally engaged between the lower end of an inclined extension 18 of detent 10 and the lower end of a member 9 which is also pivoted at 17. The edge of member 9 forms an abutment resiliently held against the edge of tongue 2 by spring 14. Release is effected by raising member 20, stud 12 moving along surface 18 and withdrawing the detent which is held withdrawn by stud 12 snapping into a recess 12<1> in member 9. When tongue 2 is withdrawn, member 9 is released to allow the parts to return to normal position. A keyoperated locking member 13 may be provided to prevent release operation of member 20. Member 2 is biassed to the inclined position shown, Fig. 2, by the inclined lower end 22 of a plate spring 5.
