498,778. Variable-speed belt gearing. GRAY, R., and STEWART & McKENZIE, Ltd. Feb. 19, 1938. No. 5275. [Class 80 (ii)] A belt-shifting device for stepped cone pulleys comprises a belt-engaging fork 1 spanned by rollers 3 to form a beltreceiving space 4, the fork being slidably mounted in a stepped cam groove 15 in a cam plate 5. The fork is carried by a pivot 8 surrounded by a roller engaging the groove, and is moved along the slot by a rod 9 guided at 10. The fork is adapted to tilt slightly so that, in advancing to a larger step, the belt is slightly twisted and its forward edge elevated. To limit the tilt, the fork has attached thereto a plate 12, Fig. 5, with inclined edges 13, 14 which are adapted to abut one face of the rod 9. The cam slot comprises inclined portions 16 to produce the shift and dwell portions 17 for each pulley step.
