Abstract
498,601. Sand-blast. GUTMANN AKT.-GES. FUR MASCHINENBAU, A. July 6, 1937, No. 18819. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1936. [Class 60] In apparatus for cleaning or otherwise treating an article by directing on to it a stream of abrasive discharged from a rapidly rotating impeller, the impeller has connected to its inlet a device which, solely as the result of the suction of the impeller, mixes the abrasive with sufficient air to enable it to be drawn into the impeller. In one form, Fig. 1, the impeller 5 mounted in a casing 1 draws in air by way of an aperture 14 and pipe 13. Abrasive is fed to a hopper 15 from which it flows into the air stream by way of an adjustable opening 16. In a modified form, Fig. 2, the impeller 5 is rotatably mounted on stub pipes 21 in a casing 1<1> which in turn is mounted on a casing 1 which houses a motor (not shown) by which the impeller is rotated. Air and abrasive are conveyed to the impeller by way of pipes 32, 31, 23, and 10. The casings 1 and 1<1> with the impeller and its motor are rotated as a whole about the axis R-R by means of bevel-gearing 28, 29. Current is supplied to the motor through slip rings mounted on a pipe 25 rotating with the casing 1. The rotation of the impeller about the axis R-R causes the abrasive to sweep out a solid of revolution and impinge on all sides of the article being treated. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 472,246.
