[Class 59] A machine for beating and refining paper making stock comprises two coaxial bladed rings, one g, stationary, and secured to the rotor casing h; the other e, attached to a rotatable disc d, the stock to be treated being fed through the aperture s to the centrifugal pump impeller i, mounted on the disc shaft, from whence it is forced between the rings into a volute t in the casing having a discharge branch u. The distance between the blades on the rings e and g is varied by axial movement of the casing which is effected by rotation of the hand wheel m and intermeshing of the worms n with worm wheels o, which, being fixed axially, move the screwed rods p secured to the casing. A valve v for enabling predetermined portions of treated stock to be returned to the inlet s via the pipe w for further treatment is connected in the discharge branch u.
