Abstract

<PICT:0780661/III/1> <PICT:0780661/III/2> In an emulsifying machine comprising a rotary member 8 carrying beaters 10, 11 and <PICT:0780661/III/3> <PICT:0780661/III/4> impeller vanes 9 so that it forms a centrifugal pump for medium introduced at an inlet 17 to be delivered through a fine passage 15 formed by relatively rotating surfaces to the passages 12, 14 containing the beaters 10, 11, the outer ends 19 of the vanes 9 are formed as cutter blades for shearing shreds, pith, pulp or other solid particles in the medium before it passes through the passage 15 to the beater passages. The rotary member 8 is contained in a housing 1, 16 and recesses 20 are provided in the wall thereof adjacent the cutters 19 to momentarily retard fibrous particles passing through the machine to facilitate shearing by the cutters 19. The rotor 8 is mounted on a shaft 6 carrying a driving pulley 7. The emulsified product is discharged through a valved port 22a. In a modification the axis of the emulsifier is disposed vertically and rotary feed paddles 24, Fig. 4, are disposed in a supply funnel 23. The recesses 20 are V-shaped. In a further modification, a hollow impeller 25, Fig. 7, has internal spiral impeller vanes 9 and beaters on both sides. The beaters or rotor may be serrated or they may be made of carborundum.
