Abstract

A fine dispersion of a powdered solid in a liquid medium is produced in two stages: (1) passing the preliminary mixture through an elongated zone 2, Fig. 2, provided with rotating blades 14 having sharp forward edges, whereby the mixture is submitted to shearing action, rotation of the liquid being prevented by inwardly projecting baffles 13 mounted on the passage wall between the sets of blades; (2) submitting the mixture to a colloid mill in which the space between the interfaces of stator <PICT:0818489/III/1> <PICT:0818489/III/2> 21 and rotor 25 taper from not less than 0.01 inch at entry to not exceeding 0.001 inch at exit. The rotating blades, Fig. 3, each have four arms 17, the forward edges of which are bevelled 18 to form a cutting edge. The blades in each set may be positioned so that one blade has a lead on that adjacent. In operation, a predetermined amount of mineral oil is mixed with a weighed amount of carbon black in powder or beaded form, and the warm mixture is fed through an inlet 48 and fills the jacketed unit A where the blades 14 are rotating at tip velocity of 3500 feet per minute. The dispersion flows through a valved conduit 1 to the unit B which has a cooling jacket. The final dispersion is withdrawn at 56, or after further treatment with shearing blades 26 at 55. Printing inks may be made in the apparatus when dispersing agents may be added to the carbon black/mineral oil mixture. Specification 765,486, [Group II], is referred to.
