498,576. Exciting dynamos. DICK, E. March 7, 1938, No. 7090. Convention date, March 8, 1937. [Class 35] In order that the polarity of a generator, e.g. a train-lighting dynamo 1 may remain the same when the direction of rotation is reversed, an exciter 8 driven therewith has a pair of brushes 13, 14 rockable through one pole division on change of direction of rotation and connected with the exciter field winding 15 which therefore has always the same polarity, and a stationary set of brushes 11, 12 connected with the main generator field winding 3, the polarity of which accordingly changes with reversal of rotation. The two sets of brushes may co-operate with separate commutators. The generator and the exciter may be separately driven from the vehicle.
