Abstract
<PICT:0498282/III/1> Apparatus for irradiating liquids, particularly for sterilizing water on board ship, comprises a reservoir for the unsterilized liquid, a number of service tanks for the sterilized liquid, and means for passing liquid from the reservoir to any one or more of the said tanks through an ultra-violet radiator. A suitable radiator comprises a central burner m surrounded by two concentric cylinders c1, h enclosing an annular space to which the liquid is admitted tangentially at s and flows helically upwards. The outer cylinder c1 may have a reflecting inner p surface, e.g. of chromium plating, and all internal surfaces of the liquid passage should be smoothly finished. A rheostat (not shown) may be included in the lamp circuit to vary the intensity of radiation.
