Abstract

229,833. Tucker, A. W. G., and Ferranti, Ltd. Jan. 24, 1924. Drying air.-Desiccating-apparatus for use with oil - immersed electric transformers is provided with a liquid seal in order to prevent access of the atmosphere to the desiccating material except during a flow through the apparatus. The liquid seal is only broken by air passing through the desiccator and is arranged so that free liquid deposited in the apparatus is automatically discharged through a U-tube communicating with the base of the liquid seal device. A cylindrical vessel a containing the desiccating material v is provided with end flanges b, c and a central tube e having holes f into which air from the desiccating chamber may pass on its way to the transformer by the tube h. The flange c is provided with holes n and an annular projection o. A casing p containing oil and fitted with air holes r is arranged concentrically with the projection o, and is provided with a U-tube s. When the transformer is cooling down. air will be drawn into the apparatus by way of the holes r, past the projection o and through the desiccator. Any liquid from the desiccating material is drained into the oil and falls to the bottom of the vessel p, being discharged through the tube s.
