Abstract

498,083. Fluid - actuated valves. AULD & SONS, Ltd., D., and GRAHAM, D. A. Oct. 23, 1937, Nos. 29020 and 35965. [Class 135] [Also in Group XII] A steam desuperheater comprises a passage 41, 42 controlled by a mushroom or disc valve 45 carried by a spindle 46 and co-operating with seats 43, 44, and a passage 52, 54, 61 in the valve spindle and valve whereby water is fed to and atomized by the steam in passing through a zone or zones of high velocity, the spindle being loaded so that the steam velocity remains constant and also being operatively connected with a water valve 68 opening and closing with the steam valve to regulate the water supply in accordance with the volume of steam. The valve may function as a reducing valve maintaining the steam pressure on the delivery side constant by the provision of a casing 48 within which an extension 46b of the valve spindle carries a flexible diaphragm 49 subjected to the pressure of a water column and of the steam in the low pressure zone 42 against a spring-loaded lever 50 which tends to raise the valve. Water is fed to the needle valve 68 through a filter 66 and pressure reducing valve 67 and thence through a pipe 69 to the valve passages and radial outlets 61, 65, the needle valve being controlled by a lever 70 linked to a lever 74 connected to the lower end of spindle 46b. The water supply through valve 68 may be augmented by a smaller supply introduced through a thermostatically controlled valve 81 and pipe 82 so that variation of temperature in the delivery side of the desuperheater effects a relatively fine regulation of the water supply. In modifications water is delivered through a number of annularly arranged passages in the valve seat or seats, one such construction embodying a valve tending to be depressed against its seat by a weight carried by a lever extending through a yoke on the valve spindle, a needle valve controlling the water supply being connected to the lever so that water is admitted in correspondence with the amount of steam passing through the desuperheater.
